Coby says "Click here to see who's at the shelter"

Pet of the Week
COBY

He doesn’t look like he misses much, does he? Trim of line and sleek of coat, Coby has been known to practice aerobics and meditation at the same time. No wonder, since he’s part lab and part greyhound, but smaller than either breed. Because he’s neat, intelligent, and very friendly, Coby promises to be an easy-to-train family pet. He’s available for adoption now at the Atlantic Animal Shelter, 309 Sunnyside Lane.

Talk about a great Christmas present!

When shelter volunteers arrived Saturday noon for the usual daily cleanup, they discovered an empty cage. On the desk were completed adoption papers for Tasha, the lab-chow favorite who had been at the shelter for several weeks.

“Everybody here loved that girl, so we’re delighted she found a new home,” explained one worker. Of course, the gift works both ways, she explained. Since Tasha received the best of care and attention possible in a shelter environment, she remained healthy and friendly, excellent qualities in an adopted pet.

Naturally, her shelter buddies have been enjoying the same kind of TLC. The current canine starlets are two fuzzy puppies who certainly do not lack for hugs and treats. A delightful blend of Australian shepherd and husky genes, these babies look like furry black-and-white mufflers with red ribbons --and, like all the shelter pets today, they’re ready for immediate adoption.

If you’re thinking about a more mature pooch to share your home, several good choices can be found at the facility.

In Cage No. 1 resides Duffy, a huggable, tan-and-white collie blend who could surely be a magazine model for country living. Duff likes to share stories with his pal across the way, a cute tan teenager nicknamed Rocky. This young guy has the worried brow of a Staffordshire terrier, the blended coloring of a shepherd, the personality of a calm lab, and the body of a large beagle. Whatever the mix, it works, and he’s one lovable kid.

Rocky’s neighbor, a small, long-haired retriever named Lucky, sports a jaunty red ribbon to set off her midnight coat. Then in Cage No. 7 lives Yukon, a handsome youngster who appears to be equal parts of shepherd and husky, with a sweet, playful personality to match. On Yukon’s right, a shy little fellow named Coby tries to stay warm in his sleek, black coat. Since he may be part greyhound, he promises to be smaller than his lab forebears, but certainly as good-natured.

In Cage No. 9, visitors will meet the largest pet in the shelter today. This would be Buddy, a pure black, longhaired retriever whose owner could not keep him. Buddy loves everyone and remains quite anxious to please. He enjoys conversing with Topper (a.k.a. Topknot), a small black cocker mix who lives across the aisle. Topper also came from an owner and offers the happy, curious personality characteristic of his breed.

In the cat condo, two quiet adults hold court--a lovely tiger-striped lady named Smoky, and a solid gray beauty dubbed Silver. They try not to notice the antics of three little gray-black kittens, who in this cold weather are trying very hard to find their mittens.

To see these wonderful pets for yourself, contact the Atlantic Animal Shelter, 309 Sunnyside Lane, 243-5281. The facility is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and new animals are arriving daily.
